Five Pitchers to Highlight: Bauer, Biddle, Tapia, Erlin, Lee

Minor league win-loss records usually aren't worth noting but Diamondbacks RHP Trevor Bauer is 4-0 with a 0.40 ERA through his first four starts for Double-A Mobile this year. He's allowed just 12 hits while striking out 28 batters over his 22.2 innings pitched. One area of concern is that he's issued 14 walks, so perhaps he's trying to be to perfect with his pitches to avoid contact. Bauer will go up against the Chattanooga Lookouts today in the pitching matchup of the day with Dodgers RHP Allen Webster.

Phillies LHP Jesse Biddle was once overshadowed by RHP Jarred Cosart, RHP Trevor May and RHP Brody Colvin but that's no longer the case. Cosart is an Astro, Colvin's development has slowed and Biddle is progressing nicely. After a strong first start to the season, Biddle has had two mediocre starts against the same Lakeland Flying Tigers squad. He's struck out 16 batters in 11.1 innings pitched against just five walks, but he's been too hittable so far, allowing 18 hits over his first three starts. He's up against the Daytona Cubs today.

Watch Biddle strike out Blue Jays OF Michael Crouse during 2012 minor league spring training:

Mets RHP Domingo Tapia is a sleeper prospect with a power arm. He gained attention pitching for the Appalaichan League's Kingsport Mets in 2011, posting a 3.78 ERA over 11 starts. So far in 2012 he's hit the ground running with his first assignment to a full season team. In his first three starts, Tapia has struck out 20 hitters over 17.2 innings pitched while allowing just 13 hits and two walks. His 2.55 ERA and 7.00 GO/AO ratios are impressive. He'll face the West Virginia Power today.

In my opinion, the Rangers got carried away with their World Series aspirations last year when they traded LHP Robbie Erlin and RHP Joe Wieland to the San Diego Padres for right-handed relief pitcher Mike Adams. Erlin had an outstanding start to the season with the Class-A+ Mytle Beach Pelicans, earning a promotion to Double-A Frisco. While his numbers (notably his ERA) jumped after joining Frisco, he posted a stellar 1.38 ERA over his first six Double-A starts in the Padres organization. 2012 hasn't been much different as Erlin has a 1.69 ERA to show for his first three starts. He's struck out 14 batters over 10.2 innings pitched. Ironically, he'll face some of his old mates and Double-A Frisco today.

Dodgers RHP Zach Lee had a very strong year in the Class-A Midwest League in 2011, posting a 3.47 ERA and 91 strikeouts in 109 innings pitched. He made 24 starts and held opposing hitters to a .242 batting average. There have been several prospects (especially pitchers) who were double promoted to skip the Class-A+ California League, but Lee has not been one of them. So far with the Class-A+ Ranco Cucamonga Quakes he's posted a 2.95 ERA over his first four starts, striking out 25 batters while walking just three in his first 21.1 innings pitched. Lee will look to keep it going against the Lancaster JetHawks today.
